SURMOUNT-5: comparison with semaglutide

Aronne LJ et al. · New England Journal of Medicine
3 July 2025

Study question & design
A 72-week, open-label phase 3b trial compared tirzepatide with semaglutide in 751 adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes.
Reported findings
Average weight reduction was greater with tirzepatide. Gastrointestinal adverse events were common in both groups, mostly mild or moderate.
Limits of interpretation
The open-label design and selected population limit interpretation. The study compared specified trial medicines; it did not assess research-market vials or all possible treatment regimens.

SUMMIT: heart failure outcomes in a defined population

Packer M et al. · New England Journal of Medicine
30 January 2025

Study question & design
A double-blind trial assigned 731 people with obesity and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction to tirzepatide or placebo.
Reported findings
The cardiovascular-death or worsening-heart-failure composite occurred less often with tirzepatide, and reported health status improved. Adverse-event discontinuations, mainly gastrointestinal, were more frequent.
Limits of interpretation
A composite result is not evidence that every component improved separately. These findings concern this heart-failure population and do not establish benefit in healthy individuals.

These notes describe selected publications, not a systematic review. They provide no dosing or treatment instructions. A published study does not establish the identity, purity, safety, efficacy or regulatory approval of an AUVYRON product.
