Handling & Storage Guide

Lyophilized Powder

Lyophilized powder is generally more stable than a reconstituted solution. An unopened vial should remain sealed, dry and protected from direct light, moisture and temperature fluctuations. When refrigerated under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, some validated lyophilized products may have shelf lives of one to two years. However, the actual expiration period must come from product-specific stability testing, the batch documentation or the manufacturer’s stated expiration date. It should not be assumed that every research peptide remains stable for two years. 

How Long Can a Reconstituted Vial Be Stored?

A reconstituted vial does not automatically become unusable after 28 days. That period is commonly used as a conservative reference for opened multi-dose vials and should not be interpreted as a universal chemical expiration date for every peptide.

Actual refrigerated stability depends on the specific compound, formulation, diluent, concentration, vial integrity and handling conditions. To reduce contamination risk, the vial should remain refrigerated and protected from light, and a new sterile syringe and needle should be used for every entry. The rubber stopper should be cleaned before each use, and the vial should be discarded if sterility is uncertain or if cloudiness, particles, discoloration, leakage or other visible changes appear.

Bacteriostatic water may help limit microbial growth, but the usable period of the final reconstituted solution remains product-specific. Where no validated stability data are available, an exact number of weeks should not be guaranteed.

Refrigeration

Reconstituted research peptides should generally be kept refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) unless product-specific documentation states otherwise. Store the vial toward the center of the refrigerator, where the temperature is more stable, rather than in the door or directly against the cooling element.

Avoid repeated temperature changes, prolonged exposure at room temperature and freezing unless the specific product instructions permit it. The vial should remain upright, protected from light and returned to refrigeration promptly after each use. Refrigeration helps slow chemical degradation and microbial growth, but it does not replace clean handling or establish an unlimited storage period. The exact conditions should always follow product-specific stability information when available. Refrigerated pharmaceutical storage is conventionally defined around 2°C–8°C, while formal shelf life must be supported by stability testing.

Light & Heat Exposure

Peptides should be protected from direct sunlight, strong indoor light and unnecessary heat exposure. Both lyophilized and reconstituted vials should remain in their original or otherwise light-protective packaging whenever possible.

Do not leave the vial in a vehicle, near a window, beside a heat source or at room temperature for extended periods. Brief handling outside refrigeration is generally unavoidable, but the vial should be returned promptly to its recommended storage conditions. Excessive heat and repeated temperature fluctuations may accelerate degradation, while light exposure may affect compounds that are photosensitive.

When product-specific instructions are available, those conditions should take priority over general storage guidance.

After Reconstitution

After reconstitution, the vial should be kept refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) unless product-specific instructions state otherwise. Store it upright, protected from light, and avoid shaking, freezing or repeated temperature changes.

Use a new sterile syringe and needle for every entry, clean the rubber stopper before each use, and return the vial to refrigeration promptly. The solution should be discarded if it becomes cloudy, develops particles, changes color, leaks or if contamination is suspected.

The usable period after reconstitution depends on the specific peptide, diluent, concentration, storage conditions and handling. Refrigeration and bacteriostatic water may help reduce degradation and microbial growth, but they do not establish an unlimited storage period.

Temporary Room-Temperature Exposure

Brief room-temperature exposure during reconstitution and handling is generally unavoidable. Some product-specific formulations permit a reconstituted vial to remain at controlled room temperature for a limited number of hours. However, this period varies by compound and formulation and should not be assumed universally.

Unless product-specific instructions state otherwise, refrigerate the vial promptly after reconstitution. Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat and prolonged room-temperature storage. Do not leave the vial in a vehicle or in an environment above normal controlled room temperature.

Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as an antimicrobial preservative. It is intended as a diluent for compatible products and may help limit bacterial growth after repeated vial entry; however, it does not prevent all contamination or guarantee long-term stability of the reconstituted peptide. 

Use only sterile, properly stored bacteriostatic water from an intact vial. Clean the rubber stopper with alcohol before each entry and always use a new sterile syringe and needle. Never reuse a syringe, even if the needle is changed. The diluent and the reconstituted vial should be discarded whenever sterility is uncertain, the seal is damaged, or visible changes appear. 

An opened multi-dose vial is commonly dated and discarded within 28 days, unless its manufacturer specifies a shorter or longer period. This limit applies to the opened bacteriostatic-water vial itself and does not establish the stability period of every peptide mixed with it.

Visual Inspection

Before each use, inspect the reconstituted vial carefully. The solution should generally appear clear and free of visible particles unless the product-specific documentation states otherwise.

Do not use the vial if you notice cloudiness, discoloration, floating particles, crystals, unusual residue, leakage, a damaged stopper or any change in appearance. A normal appearance does not guarantee sterility, but any visible change is a reason to stop using the vial and discard it.

Product-Specific Stability

Stability varies significantly among peptides and formulations. Factors such as the amino-acid sequence, concentration, pH, diluent, container, exposure to light, refrigeration and repeated vial entry can affect both chemical potency and sterility.

General storage guidance should not replace product-specific instructions, manufacturer documentation or validated laboratory stability data. When reliable information is available for a particular compound, those conditions and time limits should take priority. In the absence of validated data, an exact refrigerated storage period should not be guaranteed solely because a vial contains a larger number of milligrams.
