Research Overview

Epitalon, also spelled Epithalon, has been investigated in cellular aging and animal longevity research. Telomerase findings are frequently discussed, but must be interpreted within the laboratory systems in which they were observed. [1][2]

02

What the Compound Is

A synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It is distinct from Epithalamin, a pineal-derived preparation; evidence for one cannot automatically be applied to the other. [1][2]

03

Regulatory or Investigational Status

Epitalon is an investigational research compound, not an FDA-approved longevity medicine. FDA identifies unresolved safety and peptide-characterization questions. [3]

04

Mechanisms or Pathways Under Investigation

Investigated endpoints include telomerase activity, telomere length and markers of cellular aging. A change in telomerase activity in cultured cells is not proof of healthier aging, cancer prevention or longer life in humans. [1]

05

Major Research Context

Foundational studies used human fibroblasts in culture and aging mice. These settings differ substantially from clinical studies in living people, including in exposure, lifespan measurement and biological complexity. [1][2]

06

Published Research Highlights

In vitro · Telomerase

Khavinson and colleagues reported telomerase-related changes and telomere elongation in cultured human fetal fibroblasts. The experiment did not assess human lifespan. [1]

Animal study · Aging mice

Anisimov and colleagues reported changes in late-survival measures and selected aging markers. Mean lifespan was not increased in the reported mouse study, illustrating why specific endpoints matter. [2]

07

Evidence Level and Research Limitations

The evidence does not establish a rejuvenation protocol or a human longevity benefit. Small mechanistic studies and animal survival endpoints require independent replication and appropriately designed clinical studies before clinical conclusions can be drawn. [1][2][3]
